In a study published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology in 2016, researchers investigated whether titanium dioxide exposure led to an increase in colorectal tumor creation in mice by using a colitis associated cancer model. By measuring tumor progression markers, the researchers found that mice given titanium dioxide experienced enhanced tumor formation in the distal colon.  There was also a decrease of cells that act as a protective barrier in the colon. The researchers wrote: “These results suggest that E171 could worsen pre-existent intestinal diseases.”

The applications in which it can be used are paints, inks, plastics, elastomers, paper, fillers, adhesives…

Lithopone is used in water-based paints because of its excellent alkali resistance. It is also used as a whitener and reinforcing agent for rubber and as a filler and whitener for paper.

In 2017, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) warned that they should revise their recommendations if any new evidence emerges in the future related to the potentially harmful effects of TiO₂NPs used in a sunscreen formulation or if they can penetrate the skin. In fact, our work could contribute to this matter because it evaluated the skin penetration of a particular kind of TiO₂NPs. [8]

Does not work with hydrogen sulfide and alkaline solutions. It is easy to decompose in the presence of acid to produce hydrogen sulfide gas. It is easily oxidized in the air and deteriorates after moisture. Whiteness and hiding power are strong.

Animal studies show exposure to titanium dioxide is linked to immunotoxicity, inflammation and neurotoxicity.
