That came after a 2021 report from an expert panel at the European Food Safety Authority, which reviewed data on titanium dioxide safety. Magnesium occurs in seawater and in ores such as dolomite (CaCO ₃ MgCO ₃), magnesite (MgCO ₃), and carnallite (MgCl ₂ KCl 6H ₂O).

CSPI says it might reconsider its rating if specifications for food-grade titanium dioxide in the U.S. are updated to ensure nanoparticles are minimized, and new studies are conducted to assess its capacity to cause cancer or other health problems.
